Ancienne Mairie de Cayenne
The former city hall of Cayenne, known as the Ancienne Mairie, is an outstanding example of late 19th-century colonial architecture in French Guiana. It is located directly across from the Place des Palmistes in the heart of the capital. The construction was completed in the 1890s under the administration of Governor Louis Albert Grodet and served as the seat of municipal government for over a century. The facade is characterized by its symmetrical structure, the blend of wood and stone elements, and the typical verandas designed to provide natural ventilation in the tropical heat. Inside, it housed grand halls for official receptions and the mayoral offices. Following the construction of a new administrative building, the historic house was renovated and now often serves cultural purposes or hosts prestigious exhibitions. It has been a protected historical monument since 1999, representing the city's political stability during the colonial era.
