Lunel is a fascinating small town in the Hérault department that gives a highly unique blend of medieval intellectual history and the passionate, rugged culture of the Camargue. During the Middle Ages, the town flourished under the moniker "La petite Jérusalem" (Little Jerusalem) because it hosted a highly esteemed center for Jewish studies, leaving a profound historical legacy. Today, Lunel is perhaps best known internationally for its exquisite sweet wine, the Muscat de Lunel, crafted from vineyards that bask in the Mediterranean sun. The absolute beating heart of local culture is the Arènes de Lunel. Here, visitors can witness the exhilarating Course camarguaise, a traditional, bloodless bull-running spectacle where highly athletic young men (raseteurs) boldly attempt to snatch small rosettes from the horns of agile black bulls. The town's grand boulevards shaded by massive plane trees and the remains of the historic Lunel Canal invite leisurely afternoon walks. Positioned perfectly on the edge of the Petite Camargue, Lunel serves as the convenient springboard for exploring the region's iconic wild marshes, flocks of pink flamingos, and roaming herds of white horses.
