Béziers is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in France, situated on a bluff overlooking the Orb River in the Occitania region. The city's extensive history dates back to Greek settlers in the 6th century BC. A dark turning point occurred in 1209 when Béziers was the site of a brutal massacre during the Albigensian Crusade against the Cathars. Its architectural landmark is the Saint-Nazaire Cathedral, an imposing 13th-century fortress-church that towers over the surrounding landscape. Béziers is also celebrated as the birthplace of Pierre-Paul Riquet, the visionary engineer behind the Canal du Midi, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Located on the city's outskirts, the Fonseranes Locks are a marvel of 17th-century engineering, featuring a staircase of nine lock chambers. Each August, the city hosts the 'Féria de Béziers', one of southern France's largest festivals, famous for its bullfights and street celebrations. The city remains a central hub for the Languedoc wine trade, supported by centuries of viticultural tradition.
