Ulvinsalo is a strict nature reserve located in the Kuhmo municipality, near the Russian border in eastern Finland. It is one of Northern Europe's most valuable areas for the protection of primary old-growth forests. The landscape is characterized by ancient stands of spruce and pine that have developed for centuries without human intervention. The reserve is part of the Friendship Park, a cross-border conservation project between Finland and Russia. Ecologically, Ulvinsalo provides a critical habitat for endangered species such as the forest reindeer and brown bear, as well as rare wood-decaying fungi and insects. Being a strict nature reserve, public access is highly restricted, ensuring the preservation of its biological integrity. Scientists use the area as a reference for studying natural forest cycles and the impacts of climate change on boreal ecosystems.

The reserve is normally reached via unpaved, secondary forest roads diverging from the main routes in the Kuhmo region. Because it lies within the border zone, careful navigation is required to find the correct entry points.
