Joensuu is the capital of the North Karelia region, located at the mouth of the Pielisjoki River on the shores of Lake Pyhäselkä. The city was established in 1848 by Tsar Nicholas I of Russia and quickly emerged as a major hub for the timber trade and river transport. During the late 19th century, Joensuu became one of Finland's busiest ports, significantly boosted by its connection to the Saimaa Canal system. Today, it is recognized as an animated university city, with students from the University of Eastern Finland making up a large portion of its population. The city's culture is deeply rooted in Karelian heritage, often reflected in its distinctive local cuisine and artisanal crafts. Joensuu is also famous for hosting Ilosaarirock, one of Finland's oldest continuously running rock festivals. Surrounded by vast wilderness, the city plays a key role in European forestry research and outdoor tourism.
