Guzara Castle (Ethiopia)

Weather…

Guzara Castle, also known as the Guzara Palace, was built around 1570 by Emperor Sarsa Dengel and is considered the architectural precursor to the famous castles of Gondar. It is situated on a strategically advantageous hill near Lake Tana, offering a wide view over the surrounding countryside. The structure is characterized by its rectangular shape, corner towers, and a construction method using stone and mortar, which shows strong parallels to the later Gondarine style. Guzara was one of the first fixed imperial residences after Ethiopian rulers had lived for centuries as itinerant kings in tent camps. The architecture shows influences that were likely mediated through contact with Ottoman and Portuguese craftsmen. Although the castle is partially in ruins today, the main walls and tower structures are still impressive and clearly recognizable. The site marks the beginning of an era of monumental stone architecture in the Christian highlands of Ethiopia.
