Mlawula Nature Reserve
Mlawula Nature Reserve covers an area of 16,500 hectares in eastern Eswatini, where the lowveld meets the rugged Lubombo Mountains. Geographically, the reserve is characterized by extreme contrasts, ranging from flat savannas to deep river gorges and high mountain ridges. Mlawula is renowned for its exceptional botanical diversity, as it sits in a transition zone between different ecological regions. Historically, the area was declared a nature reserve in 1978 to protect the unique ecosystems of the Lubombo region. The reserve is home to a variety of wildlife, including hyenas, numerous antelope species, and an array of reptiles, and it is particularly noted among birdwatchers for its raptors. The Mbuluzane and Mlawula Rivers flow through the territory, providing critical water sources for the resident animals. Visitors value Mlawula for its solitude and the chance to explore untouched wilderness on extensive hiking trails. The management focuses on ecotourism, offering simple camping facilities and cottages for nature enthusiasts.
