Lake Manzala is the largest of the northern delta lakes in Egypt, spanning the governorates of Port Said, Dakahlia, Damietta, and Sharqia. Located in the northeastern Nile Delta, it is separated from the Mediterranean Sea by a narrow coastal ridge, with several openings facilitating water exchange. Originally covering an area of over 1,700 square kilometers, it has shrunk to approximately 1,360 square kilometers due to intensive land reclamation and drainage. The shallow waters form a highly sensitive ecological ecosystem, providing a habitat for numerous migratory birds and serving as a crucial breeding ground for fish. Despite its ecological significance, the lake is heavily impacted by industrial and agricultural wastewater, which has led to a decline in water quality. In recent years, the Egyptian government has initiated large-scale remediation projects to clean the lake and restore fish stocks. The local economy is deeply dependent on fishing, which faces challenges from increasing salinity levels and persistent pollution.
