Asyut is the capital of the Asyut Governorate and the largest city in Upper Egypt, situated on the west bank of the Nile. The city has a lengthy history dating back to Pharaonic times, when it was known as Lycopolis and served as a cult center for the deity Wepwawet. Today, Asyut is a major administrative, educational, and economic hub for southern Egypt. Assiut University is one of the largest and most respected institutions of higher learning in the country. A prominent landmark is the Asyut Barrage on the Nile, originally completed in 1902, which is critical for regulating irrigation for the surrounding agricultural lands. The city is also a significant center for Coptic Christianity, with numerous historic churches and monasteries in the vicinity, such as the Al-Muharraq Monastery. Economically, Asyut is characterized by food processing, textile production, and traditional carpet weaving.
