Ciudad Mitad del Mundo is a touristic and cultural complex north of Quito, marking the location where the Equator crosses the country. The centerpiece of the site is a 30-meter-high monument built between 1979 and 1982 to commemorate the 18th-century French Geodesic Mission. This mission, led by Charles-Marie de La Condamine, scientifically determined the course of the equatorial line for the first time in 1736. The monument is constructed of iron and concrete and clad in polished andesite stone. Inside, it houses an ethnographic museum showcasing the diversity of Ecuador's indigenous cultures. A yellow line painted on the ground symbolically marks the boundary between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Although modern GPS measurements have revealed that the actual Equator lies about 240 meters further north, the site remains a major symbol of scientific history and Ecuadorian national identity.
