Yasuní National Park (Ecuador)

Weather…

Yasuní National Park, located in eastern Ecuador, is widely considered one of the most biologically diverse places on Earth, covering nearly 10,000 square kilometers. Established in 1979 and designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1989, it sits at the unique intersection of the Andes, the Amazon, and the Equator. This geographic positioning fosters an unparalleled concentration of life, with thousands of species of trees, plants, and animals coexisting within small plots of land. Yasuní is also the ancestral home of the Waorani people and the Tagaeri and Taromenane, groups living in voluntary isolation whose territories are legally protected. Despite its immense ecological significance, the park has been at the center of global debates regarding oil extraction due to the vast reserves beneath its soil. Preserving this pristine ecosystem is crucial not only for local biodiversity but also for global climate regulation efforts.

🧭
Getting there
Access is normally by motorized canoe from the town of Coca (Puerto Francisco de Orellana) down the Napo River, followed by smaller boat trips into the tributaries deep within the park.
📅
Best season
Visiting is possible year-round; however, the slightly drier months from December to February and in August and September make hiking on the forest trails significantly easier for visitors.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
Expect dense, humid tropical rainforest with some swampy sections; the trails can become very muddy and slippery after rainfall, making navigation on foot challenging even for experienced hikers.
🎒
What to bring
Rubber boots (often provided by lodges), lightweight long-sleeved clothing, high-potency insect repellent, and reliable rain gear are indispensable for any excursions into the jungle.
🅿️
Parking
There are no roads for private vehicles within the national park; secure parking lots are available in Coca before boarding the boats for multi-day expeditions into the rainforest interior.
⚠️
Safety
Always stay close to your guide to avoid getting lost in the dense forest; be cautious of stinging insects and maintain a respectful distance from the local wildlife at all times.
⏱️
Time needed
A stay of at least 4 to 5 days is highly recommended to truly experience the immense biodiversity and to visit remote areas such as the famous parrot clay licks within the park boundaries.
