Iglesia de la Balbanera (Ecuador)

Weather…

The Iglesia de la Balbanera is a historical monument of outstanding significance, as it is considered the first church built by the Spanish on the territory of modern-day Ecuador. It was founded on August 15, 1534, by the conquistadors near the Colta lagoon, close to the original site of the city of Riobamba. The church's architecture is simple and robust, constructed from carved volcanic stone, which helped it survive the devastating earthquake of 1797 that almost entirely destroyed the original city of Riobamba. The facade displays an interesting transitional style with Renaissance elements and early colonial influences. Inside, the church remains simple yet preserves a deep spiritual atmosphere, commemorating the first steps of evangelization in the region. From the church, visitors can enjoy an impressive view of the Chimborazo volcano, making it a key destination for cultural and nature tourists. As the oldest Christian place of worship in the country, it is a protected national heritage site.
