Church of El Carmen

The Church of El Carmen is a historically significant house of worship in the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo, with origins dating back to the early 18th century. The current structure was completed around 1709 and is noted for its elegant Baroque facade and the characteristic Chapel of San Andrés. Beyond its religious function, the church played a pivotal role in the history of Dominican independence. In the 19th century, it served as a secret meeting place for members of 'La Trinitaria,' the resistance movement led by Juan Pablo Duarte. The conspirators used the church's proximity to the home of one of their members to hatch their plans for liberation from Haitian rule. Inside, the church impresses with its simple yet dignified atmosphere and valuable religious sculptures. Today, it stands as a symbol of the courage of Dominican patriots and a cherished part of the city's colonial heritage.
