Jelling Monuments (Denmark)

Weather…

The Jelling Monuments are considered the 'baptismal certificate of Denmark' and constitute one of the most significant archaeological sites from the Viking Age. The complex consists of two massive burial mounds, two runestones, and a church, marking the birth of the Danish state and the transition from paganism to Christianity. The smaller runestone was erected by King Gorm the Old for his wife Thyra, while the larger stone was set by Harald Bluetooth around 965 AD. This famous stone proclaims that Harald won all of Denmark and Norway and converted the Danes to Christianity, featuring the oldest depiction of Christ in Scandinavia. The entire site, once enclosed by a vast ship-shaped stone setting and a wooden palisade wall, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1994. Jelling was a central power hub for the Knytlinga dynasty. Today, a modern visitor center connects the historical relics with interactive exhibitions that bring Viking culture and Danish royal history to life.
