Viborg is one of Denmark's most historically significant cities, located in the central part of the Jutland peninsula. During the Viking Age, it served as a primary site for 'Thing' assemblies, where Danish kings were elected and law codes established. The name Viborg originates from the Old Norse words 'Vi' (sanctuary) and 'Borg' (fortress), indicating its pre-Christian religious importance. The city's crown jewel is Viborg Cathedral, originally dating from the 12th century and famous for its extensive fresco cycle by artist Joakim Skovgaard. For centuries, it functioned as the administrative capital of Jutland and remains home to the High Court of Western Denmark. The city is beautifully situated between the two Viborg lakes, providing a scenic backdrop for its medieval streets. Today, Viborg is also recognized as an international hub for animation and visual arts education.
