Tachov, located near the German border in the Plzeň Region, is a town with a rich and turbulent history. Its greatest pride is the massive, almost completely preserved medieval fortification system surrounding the old town. A walk along the walls and towers feels like a journey back to the 14th century. The town's skyline is dominated by Tachov Castle, originally a Gothic castle and later rebuilt in a classicist style. Today it houses an art school and is open to the public. Besides the fortifications, the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is another significant landmark. The surrounding region of the Bohemian Forest (Český les) gives numerous opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking and cycling in pristine nature. Culinarily, visitors can enjoy hearty Bohemian cuisine, often accompanied by a glass of world-famous Czech beer. Be sure to try 'Knedlíky' (dumplings) in their various forms. Getting to Tachov is easiest by car or bus from Plzeň or across the German border. The town is a convenient base for exploring the lesser-known but equally beautiful parts of West Bohemia. The best times to visit are spring and summer, when the weather is good for city exploration and nature trips, and when local festivals take place.
