Getting there
The mountain range is easily accessible by car from the coast via various mountain passes and small villages. Once at the top, numerous trails start directly from the historical sites or mountain settlements.
Best season
Spring and autumn offer the most pleasant climate for hiking, avoiding the oppressive heat of the Cypriot summer. The views are also spectacular on clear winter days, even though it can be quite windy at the top.
Terrain & paths
The limestone peaks create a very rugged, rocky, and often steep terrain that requires absolute surefootedness. The paths are often stony and uneven, making progress quite challenging in certain specific places.
What to bring
Sturdy mountain boots are an absolute must due to the sharp rocks and loose stones often found on the paths. Sufficient sun protection, a windproof jacket, and plenty of water also belong in every hiker's backpack.
Parking
Parking spaces are mostly found near the castles (such as St. Hilarion) or within the small mountain villages. It is advisable to arrive early in the day, as these small parking areas fill up quickly in peak season.
Safety
When hiking near steep cliffs and on rocky ridges, extreme caution is required to prevent accidental falls. It is strongly advised not to leave the officially marked paths and to keep a close eye on the weather.
Time needed
Depending on the route, tours in these mountains can last from a short two-hour loop to extensive full-day hikes. Exploring the entire length of the mountain range would take ambitious hikers multiple days.
