Historical Center of Barva (Costa Rica)

Weather…

The historical center of Barva is one of the oldest and best-preserved colonial towns in Costa Rica. Founded in 1561, the town's layout follows the classic Spanish 'Leyes de Indias' grid, featuring a central plaza flanked by significant public buildings. The local architecture is characterized by traditional adobe houses (mud brick) with thick walls and red clay tile roofs, designed to maintain a cool interior climate. The Church of San Bartolomé, with its current structure dating back to the 18th century, serves as the centerpiece of the historic district. Barva is also widely known as the birthplace of the Costa Rican masquerade tradition, which plays a central role in local festivities. In 1975, the center was declared a National Heritage Site to safeguard its authentic colonial atmosphere. Walking through the streets of Barva allows visitors to experience the country's colonial past firsthand in a lively and culturally rich environment.
