Church of San Rafael de Heredia

The Church of San Rafael de Heredia is a premier example of Neo-Gothic architecture in Costa Rica, located in the province of Heredia. Construction of the current structure began in 1862 under the direction of Italian engineer Quinto Turini and reached substantial completion in 1877. The building is constructed from stone quarried in the nearby mountains, giving it a distinctive grey facade characterized by pointed arches and two prominent spires. Inside, the church features exquisite stained-glass windows imported from France and ornate altars that showcase 19th-century European craftsmanship. As a designated historical-architectural heritage site, it serves as a central landmark for the town of San Rafael. The church's design is influenced by the European styles brought to the country during the coffee boom era, reflecting the wealth and cultural aspirations of the period. Its massive stone walls and intricate carvings make it one of the most photographed religious buildings in the Central Valley.
