La Portada (Chile)

Weather…

La Portada is a distinctive natural stone arch located off the coast of Chile, approximately 18 kilometers north of the city of Antofagasta. This impressive geological formation was shaped over millions of years by the continuous erosive power of the Pacific Ocean acting on sedimentary rock and marine fossil shell layers. Standing 43 meters high, 70 meters long, and 23 meters wide, the arch rises majestically from the ocean, framed by towering coastal cliffs. The area was designated a National Monument in 1990 to preserve its unique geology and protect the marine bird species that inhabit the site. Visitors can observe the continuous sculpting of the structure by wind and water from various viewpoints along the cliffside. La Portada is home to significant colonies of Guanay cormorants, Inca terns, and occasionally endangered Humboldt penguins. The arch is one of Northern Chile's most iconic landmarks and a symbol of the Atacama region's dynamic coastline.
