Binder-Léré Hippo Habitat (Chad)

Weather…

The Binder-Léré Sanctuary in southwestern Chad hosts one of the most important habitats for hippopotamuses in Central Africa. The protected area encompasses Binder-Léré National Park, known for its diverse aquatic landscapes, including Lakes Léré and Trené, as well as the Mayo-Kébbi River. Hippos find handy refuges here and abundant food in the coastal vegetation zones. Beside hippos, the area is also known for the presence of manatees, making it ecologically particularly valuable. The landscape is defined by the spectacular Gauthiot Falls, which form a natural barrier for many fish species. Despite its official protected status, the area is under pressure from agriculture, fishing, and illegal hunting. Conservation projects are working to raise awareness among the local population about the value of these charismatic animals. Binder-Léré is an important refuge for the region's megafauna and plays a central role in preserving biodiversity along the border with Cameroon. The combination of rivers, waterfalls, and lakes makes it one of Chad's most scenic areas.
