The Dzanga-Sangha Rainforest, located in the far southwestern tip of the Central African Republic, is part of a world-class transboundary protected area complex. As the core of the Sangha Trinational UNESCO World Heritage site, it encompasses dense lowland tropical forests renowned for their exceptional biodiversity. The area is protected by the Dzanga-Sangha Special Reserve and the Dzanga-Ndoki National Park, established in 1990. The forest is most famous for the Dzanga Bai, a mineral-rich forest clearing where hundreds of forest elephants and western lowland gorillas regularly congregate. The vegetation is characterized by giant tree species such as the moabi, which form a closed canopy sheltering numerous endemic birds and insects. Human history in the region is deeply intertwined with the Ba'Aka pygmy people, whose traditional knowledge of medicinal plants and hunting techniques has been preserved for generations. Despite international conservation efforts, the forest remains threatened by poaching and illegal logging. Ecotourism plays an increasing role in providing alternative livelihoods for local communities while ensuring the long-term survival of this unique ecosystem.
