Mount Thor (Canada)

Weather…

Mount Thor, located on Baffin Island within Auyuittuq National Park in Nunavut, is one of the most striking peaks in the Arctic Cordillera. Standing at 1,675 meters, it is internationally famous for possessing Earth's greatest purely vertical drop, which plunges 1,250 meters. The cliff face has an average inward angle of 105 degrees, making it technically overhanging. This geological feature is composed of solid Precambrian granite and was sculpted over millennia by intense glacial erosion. The first successful ascent was recorded in 1953 by an expedition from the Arctic Institute of North America. Due to the extreme Arctic climate and immense technical difficulty, it remains a premier destination for elite rock climbers and BASE jumpers. The surrounding environment is characterized by stark fjords and massive glaciers typical of the high Canadian North.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Reaching this exceptionally remote peak typically requires a strenuous multi-day hike through Auyuittuq National Park on Baffin Island, usually starting from Pangnirtung.
📅
Best season
The short and fleeting Arctic summer, typically lasting from mid-July to August, is generally the only viable time for visiting, as the winter months are exceptionally harsh and dark.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The extensive approach involves traversing rugged Arctic tundra, rocky moraines, and glacial rivers, while scaling the peak itself demands highly advanced big-wall climbing capabilities.
🎒
What to bring
Explorers typically require comprehensive wilderness backpacking equipment, robust extreme cold-weather clothing, and highly specialized technical climbing gear if attempting an ascent.
🅿️
Parking
There is absolutely no road access or parking anywhere near the mountain; visitors usually leave their vehicles in southern Canada and take flights into the remote staging communities.
⚠️
Safety
Sudden extreme weather changes, potential polar bear encounters, and the absolute geographical remoteness make this a uniquely challenging environment requiring total self-sufficiency.
⏱️
Time needed
A typical wilderness expedition merely to view the peak takes about ten to fourteen days round-trip from the nearest settlement, not including the highly complex preliminary travel logistics.
