St. John's, capital of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, sits on the northeastern coast of the Avalon Peninsula and, with around 110,000 residents (Greater St. John's: about 220,000), is one of the oldest European settlements in North America. John Cabot reached the region as early as 1497, and the natural harbor with its narrow entrance, the 'Narrows', served for centuries as a haven for cod fishing. The colorful Victorian houses lining the steep streets define the city's famous look, as does the Cabot Tower on Signal Hill, where Marconi received the first transatlantic radio signal in 1901. Oil, fisheries, and tourism dominate the economy.
