💡 Tips
- Bélabo is a key station on the Camrail railway line; experiencing a train arrival or departure is a chaotic but fascinating local event.
- The town serves as a gateway to the dense eastern forests and timber yards; be cautious of large logging trucks on the roads.
- Deng Deng National Park is relatively close; ask around at the local forestry offices for the possibility of organizing a guided trip to see apes.
- Life moves slowly here; exercise patience in restaurants and shops, as service operates on 'Cameroon time'.
- Carry sufficient cash, as ATMs are scarce and may not always accept international cards or have cash available.
🍽 Food
Fresh catches from the nearby Sanaga River, seasoned and grilled over open flames. Best found at small maquis near the train station.
A nutritious dish of shredded wild leaves cooked with palm oil and smoked meat, eaten with water fufu. Try it at eateries catering to forestry workers.
Vendors around the railway station sell excellent roasted peanuts and corn on the cob for a quick snack.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
The platform becomes an impromptu market when the train arrives, offering everything from local fruits to homemade snacks.
Look out for small workshops selling expertly crafted wooden spoons and bowls made from sustainable offcuts.
Take a short walk out of the main town to the banks of the Sanaga River for a peaceful spot to watch the water flow.
The transition zone between the town and the dense forest gives quiet dirt roads convenient for a contemplative stroll.

Bélabo is an important railway town in Lom-et-Djérem Department of the East Region, sitting on the Sanaga River about 60 kilometres north of Bertoua. Home to around 25 000 inhabitants, the town owes its existence mainly to its station on the Transcamerounaise line linking Yaoundé via Bélabo to Ngaoundéré, a central logistics point for timber, livestock and bauxite from the north. Bélabo also hosts the Sanaga-Yong Rescue Center, a globally renowned chimpanzee rehabilitation project run by the NGO Ape Action Africa for animals seized from poaching. The population is predominantly Bobilis, Maka and Pol. The economy rests on rail logistics, cocoa, maize, timber and freshwater fishing on the Sanaga. Highlights include the Mefou chimpanzee reserve, the 1960s railway station and the Sanaga rapids. The humid tropical climate sustains lush forests and year-round water levels on the Sanaga.
