Melchior Ndadaye International Airport (Burundi)

Weather…

Melchior Ndadaye International Airport is Burundi's premier aviation gateway, located approximately six kilometers northwest of the Bujumbura city center. The facility was originally opened in 1952 during the Belgian trusteeship administration and was known for decades simply as Bujumbura International Airport. In July 2019, it was officially renamed to honor Melchior Ndadaye, the country's first democratically elected president, who was assassinated in 1993. The airport sits at a strategic elevation of 787 meters above sea level, directly on the northeastern shores of Lake Tanganyika. It features a single asphalt runway with a total length of 3,600 meters, enabling the operation of large wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 787 or Airbus A330. As a vital lifeline for passenger and cargo traffic, it connects the landlocked nation of Burundi with regional hubs like Nairobi, Addis Ababa, and Entebbe, as well as maintaining essential international connections to destinations in Europe and beyond.
