Kota Batu Archaeological Park (Brunei)

Weather…

Kota Batu Archaeological Park is one of the most significant historical sites in Brunei, marking the center of the ancient Sultanate between the 14th and 17th centuries. Located along the banks of the Brunei River, this area was once a thriving trade hub and the official residence of the early Sultans. Extensive excavations starting in the 1950s uncovered stone and brick foundations, Chinese ceramics, and coins that document the far-reaching trade links as far as China and Java. The strategic location allowed for effective control over river traffic and solidified Brunei's power position throughout Southeast Asia. Following the destruction during the Spanish Expedition of 1578, the site gradually lost its significance to the water village of Kampong Ayer. Today, visitors can explore the conserved remains via wooden walkways, providing valuable insights into the pre-colonial architecture and urban planning of the region.
