Serowe Rhino Sanctuary (Botswana)

Weather…

The Khama Rhino Sanctuary near Serowe was established in 1992 as a community-based initiative to protect Botswana's endangered rhinoceros population. Spanning approximately 8,500 hectares of Kalahari sandveld, the reserve provides a well-suited habitat for both white and the rarer black rhinoceros species. In addition to rhinos, the protected area is home to giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, and over 230 species of birds. A central feature of the sanctuary is the Serwe Pan, a natural depression that serves as a vital water source for the wildlife. The project is a successful example of community-led conservation, with revenues directly benefiting the local population and educational programs. Through strict security measures and breeding programs, the rhino population within the sanctuary has steadily increased since its inception. Today, the facility serves as a crucial reservoir for reintroducing rhinos to other regions across Botswana.
