Khama Rhino Sanctuary (Botswana)

Weather…

The Khama Rhino Sanctuary (KRS) is a community-based wildlife project located near Serowe, Botswana. Established in 1992, it was designed to protect the endangered white and black rhinos from extinction while providing economic benefits to the local community through tourism. The sanctuary covers approximately 8,500 hectares of land, primarily consisting of Kalahari sandveld with dense mopane and acacia woodlands. At the heart of the reserve lies the Serwe Pan, a natural depression that serves as an essential water source and mineral lick for the animals. In addition to rhinos, the KRS is home to zebras, giraffes, wildebeests, and over 230 bird species. The project is hailed as one of Botswana's most successful conservation models, as it provides educational programs for local schools and has successfully grown its rhino population to the point where animals are frequently relocated to other national parks. High-level security is maintained through continuous patrols by the Botswana Defence Force and dedicated private rangers.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
Khama Rhino Sanctuary is open year-round, but the best time for rhino sightings is the South African winter from May to September. During this time, vegetation is sparser and animals visit the waterholes more frequently.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning and late afternoon are when rhinos are most active, grazing and moving to waterholes. During the midday heat they often rest in the shade, making the cooler hours the most productive.
📜
Etiquette
Always remain inside the vehicle and keep a safe distance of at least 30 metres from the rhinos. Avoid sudden movements and loud noises to avoid stressing the animals.
🎒
What to bring
A binocular with good magnification is important for observing rhinos from a safe distance. Sun hat, sunscreen and plenty of water are essential, as it can get very hot in the Kalahari region.
🧭
Getting there
Khama Rhino Sanctuary is located about 40 kilometres northeast of Serowe in Botswana and is accessible via the A1 road. The access is via a gravel road that is easily passable with a normal car.
🦌
What to expect
Rhinos can rest for hours, so it is worth waiting at a waterhole until they come. Especially in the dry season, the chances are good that they will appear in the early morning hours.
