Lukomir
Lukomir is the highest and most isolated mountain village in Bosnia and Herzegovina, situated at an altitude of 1,495 meters on the southern slopes of Mount Bjelašnica. The village is famous for its traditional architecture, featuring stone-built houses with steep wooden shingle roofs designed to withstand the heavy snowfalls of the winter months. Historical evidence, such as the medieval stećci tombstones found in the vicinity, suggests that the settlement dates back to at least the 14th century. Due to extreme weather conditions, the village is mostly inhabited seasonally, with residents moving to lower elevations during the coldest months and returning in the spring. Lukomir has preserved its ancient way of life, where sheep farming and the production of hand-knitted wool products remain the primary livelihoods. Located at the edge of the deep Rakitnica Canyon, the village features a remote and geographically dramatic setting. It is often described as a living museum of Dinaric nomadic culture and is accessible only via unpaved mountain roads.
