Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

The Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge in Višegrad is an architectural jewel of the 16th century, spanning the Drina River in eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina. Commissioned by Grand Vizier Mehmed Paša Sokolović, it was designed by the celebrated Ottoman court architect Mimar Sinan and completed in 1577. The bridge consists of 11 elegant pointed arches and extends over a total length of nearly 180 meters. Historically, it served as a crucial link on the trade route connecting Sarajevo with Constantinople. The structure gained worldwide literary fame through the novel 'The Bridge on the Drina' by Nobel laureate Ivo Andrić, which chronicles the region's history over four centuries centered around the bridge. In recognition of its outstanding architectural and historical significance, the bridge was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2007. It remains one of the finest examples of Ottoman bridge architecture in the Balkan Peninsula.
