Bihać is a historic city in northwestern Bosnia and Herzegovina, located on the banks of the emerald Una River near the Croatian border. The city was first mentioned in 1260 in a charter by King Béla IV of Hungary and grew into a vital royal fortress and free city during the Middle Ages. A unique architectural landmark is the Fethija Mosque, which was originally constructed in the 13th century as the Gothic Church of St. Anthony before being converted after the Ottoman conquest in 1592. Bihać gained significant political importance during World War II when it hosted the first session of AVNOJ in 1942, a milestone in the creation of the Yugoslav state. The city is the gateway to the Una National Park, famous for its striking travertine waterfalls and pristine river landscapes.
