Perućica Primeval Forest (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

Perućica is one of the last remaining primeval forests in Europe, located within the Sutjeska National Park in southeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina. Spanning approximately 1,434 hectares, the forest is under strict protection, as it has remained untouched by human intervention for centuries. The vegetation is dominated by massive beech, fir, and spruce trees, some of which are over 300 years old and reach heights of up to 50 meters. A central geographical highlight is the Skakavac waterfall, which plunges 75 meters down a rocky cliff in the heart of the forest. The biodiversity is immense, hosting rare animal species like brown bears, wolves, and lynxes, along with a vast array of endemic plants. Due to its pristine condition, Perućica serves as an essential outdoor laboratory for ecological research and the preservation of genetic resources. Access to the core area is strictly controlled and permitted only with specialized guides to prevent disturbing the fragile balance of this unique ecosystem.
