Počitelj (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

Počitelj is a historic fortified town located on the left bank of the Neretva River, about 30 kilometers south of Mostar. This unique settlement serves as an open-air museum, showcasing a remarkable blend of medieval and Ottoman architectural styles. Originally established in the 14th century by the Bosnian King Tvrtko I, it was later expanded by the Ottomans into a vital strategic fortress to defend against Venetian incursions. Key architectural highlights include the Šišman Ibrahim-paša Mosque from 1563, the iconic Clock Tower (Sahat-kula), and the traditional Gavrankapetanović stone houses. The town is terraced into a steep hillside, offering commanding views of the Neretva Valley from its upper defensive walls. Despite damage during the 1990s conflict, Počitelj has been extensively restored and is currently on the UNESCO tentative list, also being famous for hosting one of the longest-running artist colonies in Southeast Europe.
