Tyne Cot Cemetery (Belgium)

Weather…

Tyne Cot Cemetery, located near the Flemish village of Passchendaele, is the largest British and Commonwealth military cemetery in the world, bearing profound witness to the unimaginable losses of the Third Battle of Ypres (Battle of Passchendaele) in 1917, where hundreds of thousands of soldiers perished in the mud of Flanders. The burial ground originally evolved around a captured German pillbox position known as the 'Tyne Cot Blockhouse,' which was utilized by Australian troops as an advanced dressing station. Today, the cemetery, designed by Sir Herbert Baker, contains 11,961 graves, a staggering 8,369 of which belong to unidentified soldiers. Standing at the rear of the site is the Tyne Cot Memorial to the Missing, a massive curving wall inscribed with the names of nearly 35,000 British and New Zealand soldiers who fell after August 1917 and whose bodies were never recovered. This site of silence and mourning remains one of the most vital places of remembrance on the Western Front.
