Mouscron (Moeskroen) is a characterful Walloon border city in the province of Hainaut, which physically merges directly into the French metropolitan region of Lille-Roubaix-Tourcoing. This geographical peculiarity as a "facilities municipality" means that the city features special linguistic arrangements for Flemish-speaking residents and is culturally strongly influenced by bilingualism. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Mouscron developed into a major center of the textile industry, particularly in carpet manufacturing and cotton processing, as evidenced today by old factory buildings and chimneys. Attractions include the neo-Gothic town hall on the central market square, as well as the Château des Comtes (Castle of the Counts), a historic estate dating from the 15th century. Every autumn, the city celebrates the Hurlus Festival, which commemorates the Protestant rebels (Hurlus) of the 16th century.
