St. Nicholas Abbey (Barbados)

Weather…

St. Nicholas Abbey, located in the parish of Saint Peter in northern Barbados, is one of the island's most significant historical treasures. Built in 1658, the Great House is one of only three genuine Jacobean-style mansions remaining in the Western Hemisphere, characterized by its elegant curved gables and coral stone walls. Beyond its architectural value, the estate serves as a living museum and a functional rum distillery. A highlight for visitors is the heritage steam-powered sugar mill, which is brought back to life during the annual crop season to grind sugarcane using traditional methods. The onsite distillery produces artisanal rum from the estate’s own cane syrup, aged in bourbon oak barrels. The surrounding grounds include lush tropical gardens and mahogany forests, offering a glimpse into the colonial agrarian history of the region.
