St. John's Parish Church stands in a dramatic cliff-top location 800 feet above the Atlantic Ocean, offering what is widely considered the most spectacular view on the island. The current structure, a classic example of English Gothic architecture, was completed in 1836 after five previous iterations were leveled by powerful hurricanes. The church is celebrated for its exquisite interior, featuring a pulpit intricately carved from a blend of local mahogany, ebony, and oak. Perhaps its most fascinating historical treasure is the tomb of Ferdinando Paleologus, a descendant of the last Byzantine Emperors, who sought refuge on the island in the 17th century. The surrounding churchyard, with its ancient gravestones and peaceful gardens, overlooks the rugged Scotland District and the rolling surf of the East Coast. It remains a place of profound serenity and historical depth, connecting the distant history of the Mediterranean to the windswept beauty of the Caribbean.
