The Bapco refinery, commissioned in 1936, was the first refinery in the Gulf region and stands as a cornerstone of the Bahraini economy. Initially built to process crude oil from the local Awali field, its capacity has been massively expanded over the decades. Today, it primarily processes crude oil from Saudi Arabia, delivered via a subsea pipeline. The plant covers a vast area on Sitra Island and produces a wide range of petroleum products, including gasoline, diesel, kerosene, and asphalt, destined for both domestic consumption and export. The refinery plays a crucial role in state revenues and is one of the country's largest employers, underscoring its strategic importance for Bahrain's stability and prosperity.
