The Gun Hill Lighthouse, also known as the Bird Rock Lighthouse, is situated at the eastern approach to the Crooked Island Passage in the Bahamas. Erected in 1876, it was designed to safeguard maritime navigation through this vital but hazardous channel, a primary route for shipping between Europe and the Panama Canal region. The lighthouse stands at a height of approximately 112 feet (34 meters) and is distinguished by its solid white conical tower. Originally fueled by oil and requiring manual operation by lighthouse keepers, the beacon was later automated during the 20th century. Its location on Bird Rock, near the area known as Gun Hill on Crooked Island, makes it a prominent maritime landmark. Beyond its functional role, the lighthouse is a historical monument to the efforts of the British Imperial Lighthouse Service to enhance safety in Caribbean waters during the 19th century.

Visiting
Gun Hill Lighthouse may be visitable depending on the owner. Access to the grounds is usually possible during the day, but often from outside only.

Photography from outside the fence is generally allowed. The lighthouse against the coastal landscape gives great subjects, especially at sunset.

Getting there
The lighthouse is on a hill south of Gregory Town on Eleuthera. By rental car, reach it via an unpaved road; 4WD is helpful.
Insider tip
Bring water and sunscreen as there is little shade on the hill. Binoculars are worth it for the far-reaching view over the island.
