While concrete evidence of its direct use by the pirate is limited, the tower likely dates back to the late 17th or early 18th century. It functioned primarily as a lookout post, providing a strategic vantage point to monitor incoming vessels approaching Nassau Harbour. Constructed from rough-cut limestone, the tower stands approximately 20 feet high, a significant elevation for surveillance at the time. During the era of the Pirate Republic in Nassau (1706-1718), this location was good for spotting merchant ships and naval patrols. Today, the ruins serve as a symbolic landmark of the Golden Age of Piracy and early Bahamian colonial history, offering sweeping views of the eastern coastline and the Atlantic Ocean.

Visiting
Blackbeard's Tower can only be viewed from the outside, as the ruin is not open for entry. The surrounding grounds are accessible during daytime and offer good views of the bay.
Typical hours
The grounds are usually free to access during daylight hours. A visit late in the afternoon is especially recommended for nice lighting conditions.
Photography
Photography is allowed freely in the outdoor area. Drone footage requires a local permit due to proximity to the airport.
Time needed
Exploring the tower and grounds takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Combined with nearby Bimini Beach, an hour is sufficient.
