Göttweig Abbey (Austria)

Weather…

Göttweig Abbey, known as the 'Austrian Montecassino' due to its dramatic hilltop location at the eastern end of the Wachau Valley, is a beacon of Benedictine spirituality and Baroque grandeur. Founded in 1083 by Bishop Altmann of Passau, the monastery has weathered centuries of conflict and change, evolving into one of Austria's most significant cultural institutions. Following a catastrophic fire in 1718, the abbey was rebuilt on a monumental scale according to designs by the master architect Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt. The centerpiece of this Baroque reconstruction is the Imperial Staircase (Kaiserstiege), featuring a spectacular ceiling fresco by Paul Troger that depicts Emperor Charles VI in a celestial apotheosis, considered one of the pinnacles of 18th-century European art. The abbey's library and its collection of over 30,000 graphic prints are among the largest and most valuable monastic archives in the world. The collegiate church, with its distinctive twin-towered facade, houses the crypt of St. Altmann and is a masterpiece of liturgical art. Today, as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Göttweig remains an active monastery while also welcoming visitors to its world-class winery, panoramic terrace restaurant, and various museum exhibitions that detail the history of the Wachau region and the enduring influence of the Benedictine order.
