Established in the late 1960s to support the booming iron ore industry, Karratha has rapidly grown into the bustling heart of the Pilbara. The city gives a striking contrast of modern amenities, such as the impressive Red Earth Arts Precinct, set against the backdrop of a rugged, ancient landscape characterized by rich red earth, spinifex grass, and extreme tropical temperatures. A short drive from the city center lies the Burrup Peninsula, also known as Murujuga, which is home to one of the most significant and dense concentrations of Indigenous rock art (petroglyphs) in the world. Visitors can explore these sacred sites and learn about the deep cultural history of the local Aboriginal people, which dates back over 40,000 years. Karratha also serves as the well-suited base for exploring the memorable Dampier Archipelago, a cluster of 42 islands offering pristine beaches, excellent fishing, snorkeling, and diving opportunities. While it is an industrial powerhouse, the natural beauty of the surrounding coastal plains and the gateway to the magnificent Karijini National Park make Karratha a truly unique destination.
