Located on the slopes of an inactive volcano, Mount Gambier is the lively heart of South Australia's Limestone Coast. The city is geographically situated almost exactly halfway between Adelaide and Melbourne, making it a first-rate natural stopover. The landscape is dominated by striking karst formations, caves, and dramatic sinkholes. The city's most famous attraction is the Blue Lake, situated in one of the extinct volcanic craters. Every year in November, the lake's water mysteriously changes from a somber winter grey to a brilliant turquoise blue, remaining bustling until late March. Another remarkable geological feature is the Umpherston Sinkhole, a collapsed cave that was transformed into a lush, sunken botanical garden in 1886. Beyond its natural wonders, Mount Gambier features a rich local food and wine scene. The nearby Coonawarra wine region provides excellent red wines that perfectly complement the fresh local produce. Visitors can easily access the city via the Princes Highway, or by domestic flights connecting through the Mount Gambier Regional Airport.
