San José Palace (Argentina)

Weather…

Palacio San José was the residence of General Justo José de Urquiza, the first constitutional president of the Argentine Confederation. Located in the Entre Ríos province, the palace was built between 1848 and 1858 by architect Jacinto Dellepiane. Its architecture is a memorable example of Italianate Renaissance style blended with local influences, reflecting the prestige of its owner. The building features 38 rooms, two magnificent courtyards, and was the first residence in Argentina to have a running water system. Historically, the palace served as a hub for major political decisions and international diplomatic meetings during the period of national organization. In 1870, General Urquiza was assassinated in one of the palace's rooms, adding a tragic layer to its historical importance. Today, Palacio San José operates as a National Museum and Monument, preserving the original furnishings, decorations, and personal items belonging to Urquiza. The surrounding extensive gardens and an artificial lake highlight the wealth and political influence Urquiza wielded during the mid-19th century.
