Potrero de Payogasta (Argentina)

Weather…

Potrero de Payogasta is a significant archaeological site in the Calchaquí Valleys of Salta province, which functioned as a key administrative center for the Inca Empire in northwestern Argentina. The settlement was likely established after 1471 during the reign of Topa Inca Yupanqui to manage agricultural production and mining activities in the region. The architecture features classic Inca elements such as the kallanka, a monumental rectangular building used for ceremonial and administrative purposes, and the ushnu, which symbolized imperial authority. The walls are constructed from local stone and adobe, with some structures maintaining a remarkable height to this day. Due to its strategic location, the site served as a vital link between the high Puna and the lower valleys. Today, Potrero de Payogasta is regarded as one of the best-preserved examples of imperial Inca architecture outside the Peruvian heartland.
