Soyo is a strategically vital city in the Zaire Province of northwestern Angola, situated at the mouth of the mighty Congo River where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. Historically, Soyo holds great significance as the site where Portuguese explorer Diogo Cão first landed in 1482, initiating European contact with the Kingdom of Kongo. During the colonial era, the town was known as Santo António do Zaire. Today, Soyo is the hub of the Angolan oil and gas industry, with numerous onshore and offshore facilities operating in its immediate vicinity. A milestone of recent development is the massive 'Angola LNG' project, one of the world's most advanced liquefied natural gas processing plants. Its geographic location between the mangrove swamps of the estuary and the open ocean creates a unique environment that has both economic potential and ecological challenges. Despite its industrial focus, the city retains traditional roots and serves as a major transit point for local trade along the Congo River.
