Mitidja Plain (Algeria)

Weather…

The Mitidja Plain is one of Algeria's most fertile and economically significant agricultural regions. It stretches approximately 100 kilometers south of the capital, Algiers, and is bordered to the south by the Tell Atlas mountain range. The plain covers an area of around 1,400 square kilometers and was originally a marshland that was reclaimed for agriculture through extensive drainage works in the 19th century. Thanks to the mild Mediterranean climate and abundant water resources, citrus fruits, vines, olives, and various vegetables are intensively cultivated here. Historically, the Mitidja was the center of colonial agriculture, which significantly shaped the current infrastructure and settlement patterns. In recent decades, the region has faced the challenge of increasing urbanization as the city of Algiers continues to expand into fertile farmland. Despite this competition, the Mitidja remains a vital pillar of Algerian food security and a prime example of the country's modern irrigated agriculture.
