Berat Castle (Albania)

Weather…

The Castle of Berat, locally known as the Kala, is a massive fortress that stands as one of the few examples of a fortified neighborhood still inhabited to this day. Perched on a high hill overlooking the Osum River, the majority of the current structure dates back to the 13th century, built upon Illyrian foundations from the 4th century BC. The fortress complex houses more than 20 Byzantine churches, such as the Holy Trinity Church, and the ruins of two Ottoman mosques, the Red and White Mosques. A highlight of the castle is the Onufri National Iconographic Museum, located within the Cathedral of the Assumption of St. Mary, featuring 16th-century masterpieces by the renowned painter Onufri. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008, the castle is praised for its preservation of Ottoman-style architecture and its unique social continuity. The winding cobblestone streets and stone-crafted houses offer a living history of the region's diverse cultural and religious heritage.
