Fier is a prominent industrial and agricultural center in western Albania, located within the fertile Myzeqe plain. While the modern city was established in the mid-19th century by the Vrioni family as a trading hub, the surrounding area is steeped in ancient history. Just a few kilometers away lie the ruins of Apollonia, one of the most important Greco-Roman cities in the Illyrian world, which Aristotle once cited as a model for oligarchy. Apollonia was a renowned center for philosophy and learning, where the future Roman Emperor Augustus famously studied. Another cultural treasure near Fier is the 13th-century Ardenica Monastery, notable as the site where national hero Skanderbeg was married in 1451. In the 20th century, Fier evolved into an economic powerhouse following the discovery of oil in nearby Patos. Today, the city remains a critical transport junction, connecting Tirana and the north to the burgeoning coastal regions of the Albanian Riviera in the south.
